Fruit and veg consumption still on the rise in Spain

According to data from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food corresponding to week 16 of this year (from April 13 to 19), consumption has grown in all categories compared to the same week of the previous year.

The most noteworthy has been the 50.6% increase recorded by food products, with above average growth for fruits and vegetables, both fresh (+66.1%) and processed (+70.5%). There has also been a significant growth in the consumption of fresh vegetables and potatoes (+74.9%) and legumes (+77.2%).

Compared to the previous week, the volume of purchases has increased slightly (+1.6%), which shows that the purchases of Spanish consumers have stabilized while in lockdown, according to the report.

The stores closest to homes, such as supermarkets and traditional stores, record above average increases in the volume of food purchased in them, with +53.2% and +63%, respectively. Discounters (+40.4%) and hypermarkets (+32%) follow in terms of growth.

Online shopping has become one of the most important alternatives to buy food due to the lockdown. Compared to the same week of 2019, there has been an increase of over 200%, and compared to the previous week, it is the channel with the most growth, followed by supermarkets.

The south-central parts of the Peninsula, Andalusia and the north of Spain recorded the greatest increases in consumption. Those registered in Madrid (+82.6%), Aragón (+79.7%) and Navarre (+73.9%) stand out the most.
