“These times are more difficult because of the Corona crisis. The retail chains are doing well and continues to purchase product, but the customers who supply the gastronomy have disappeared or are purchasing less,” says Mr. Akarca from Elite Foods. "We are grateful that we can continue working, even though we can only run at 60 to 70% of what we normally do."
“Because the virus also affects Morocco, Turkey and the southern European countries, the supply of vegetables from these countries has disappeared. This allows us to sell more Belgian and Dutch products. That is positive for us. Prices, on the other hand, are declining somewhat, but that is because productions are increasing and more is becoming available. The supply of Elite vine tomatoes is also starting to increase again and we hope that we will be able to sell beautiful volumes again in the coming period,” says Akarca.
Although some of the customers have disappeared, Elite Foods still had a nice Easter sale. “We sold well last Friday and Monday. In normal years we would sell a lot more, but it is what it is. The demand for tomatoes is currently good, but cucumbers are doing very poorly. Prices are dramatically low, and the part that could not be sold has collapsed in previous weeks. These are very strange times and no one has ever experienced such a situation before, we hope it will be over soon," Akarca concludes.
