The agrarian organization Asaja Córdoba has reported that the orange harvest campaign is currently about 70% complete. This season has been marked by a general decline in the production in all citrus growing areas of Spain, with an improvement of prices compared to the previous year, when they hit rock bottom.
The president of Asaja Córdoba, Ignacio Fernández de Mesa, praised “the sector's effort to work in a situation as complex as the one caused by the coronavirus pandemic, aiming to prevent imbalances in the food supply."
At the moment, work has been completed with the Navelina and Salustiana varieties, and that with the Lane Late is also nearing completion. The ones currently being harvested are mostly the Powell and Barfield, but work is also starting with the Valencia.
As for the harvesting pace, last week it was very quick, although this week it has been reduced by 25% due to the initial problems related to worker mobility. However, "the harvesting continues at a good pace and the activity proceeds normally."
As for prices, they are still similar to how they were before the State of Alarm was decreed by the Government of Spain, so there has not been a significant increase at origin, although the demand has grown considerably.
In terms of production, and as already announced in January, Cordoba expects a reduction of around 15-20% of the total volume compared to the previous season, when there was a record production in the province.
