Marcel van Bruggen, ABC Logistics

“We are keeping a close eye on the border situation”

Fresh fruit and vegetable transport companies still have work. "Retail orders are increasing at the moment. We have noticed that," says Marcel van Bruggen of the Dutch company, ABC Logistics. “These extra orders mean we are making more trips for this sector. On the other hand, the demand from other clients in decreasing. These include those in the hospitality industry. We are still lucky enough to find ourselves in the right corner."

The Dutch government has designated the transportation sector as an essential service. Trucks must stay on the roads. "We have taken the necessary measures to protect our drivers. They can, therefore, keep doing their jobs. At many places, they have to remain in the truck's cab. They are no longer allowed into the warehouse. We have taken all the precautions needed."

"That means direct contact is avoided as much as possible. There is a skeleton staff at the office. We are, however, fully supported by colleagues working from home. The warehouse facilities are only accessible to warehouse personnel. Hygiene guidelines have also been further tightened. And contact between employees is as limited as possible," says Marcel.

In the meantime, it is being reported than many European countries have closed their internal borders. This is especially true for Poland and Hungary. Denmark, Norway, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria are also taking strict measure at their borders. There are, however, exceptions for goods transport vehicles. Marcel has not yet seen many limits concerning the transportation sector. "We not only go to the United Kingdom. We are making more trips to Germany too."

"I have, however, not heard anything from my drivers about experiencing much inconvenience. That is, in part, thanks to the fact that we go through the borders late at night. We keep a constant eye on the Dutch Transport logistics live blog. This site gives up-to-the-minute reports of traffic congestion and measures at Europe's internal borders. This information is helpful, not only for transport but also for our drivers."

For now, ABC Logistics is in a good position in the sector. "We have noticed serious problems at fellow companies in, for example, the floriculture sector. However, we continue to transport a basic necessity of life for people. That makes a difference. Right now, especially, people must eat healthy fruit and vegetables."

"I am, however, concerned about what might happen in a month from now. Overseas containers are still arriving now. But, I wonder how things will go in the future. The Dutch season is about to start soon too. It will be interesting to see what happens," concludes Marcel.
