"Spanish cauliflower season done weeks earlier due to high temperatures"

Due to the summer temperatures in Catalonia, Spain, the citrus season is ahead of schedule. “The Nardocott are three weeks earlier than usual. I therefore expect that this will result that we will stop a week or three earlier, but we still have volumes to meet the demand," says John Gijbels of Euro Gijbels. “The demand for Nardocott is fairly normal for this time of the year. So far it's been a great citrus season."

In addition to citrus, Euro Gijbels also grows vegetables in Spain, including leafy vegetables, herbs, fennel and cauliflower. “We have almost run out of cauliflower. The vegetables are also ahead of schedule due to the weather. We even had to plough over a field , because certain varieties could not handle the warm weather. Last week, the demand for cauliflowers was disappointing, but this week the demand has picked up considerably, "said John. The demand for fennel is very poor this winter. We have a good harvest, but there is probably too much product on the market. Both Spain and Italy have a lot to offer this year. "

For the ecological reasons, Euro Gijbels has recently conducted a test with transport by train. “We have sent product from Spain via rail to Belgium. I think that rail transport has potential. For the future, it is important that we look at alternatives to road transport, and rail transport is a good example of that, ”John concludes.
