Lidl introduces reusable bags for fruit and veg

As a further step in its policy of reducing plastic use, Lidl has introduced new reusable Green Bags. Last year, more than a quarter of a billion microtene bags were consumed in Lidl stores. Reusable sachets are placed in the fruit and vegetables section and sold in packs of two for CZK 19.90 (0.79 Euro).

“Offering reusable bags as an alternative to microtene bags is the next step in our company-wide Reset Plastic strategy. The focus is on reducing the amount of plastic we use in our private label products,” said Lidl's executive Michal Farník. The first 100,000 bags will be distributed free of charge for purchases worth over CZK 500 (19.74 Euro).

Lidl started the “green” policy in March 2017, when it stopped selling disposable shopping bags after selling more than 27 million units in 2016. In 2018, it aimed to reduce the amount of plastic used for its private label products by 20% by 2025 at the latest, and all plastic materials used should be recyclable.

“We are working hard on this measure together with our suppliers, examining the possibility of replacing or reducing the plastic packaging in each individual product,” said Farník.
