After Berlin, priorities turn to winter vegetables

"As usual, Fruit Logistica proved to be a meeting point for all the operators in the fruit and vegetable industry., even though the fair was marked by fears and defections due to coronavirus infection," explained Claudio D'Alba of Plantis Group, an Apulian company which exports fruit and vegetables abroad.

"Certainly, we had fewer visitors at this Berlin event than in the past few years, but there were still plenty of opportunities to make new contacts and sign contracts. As far as we are concerned, despite some last-minute cancellations from customers and potential customers, a few new supermarket chains from Northern Europe showed up and we were able to make new connections with foreign suppliers. We missed out mainly on curious visitors, but otherwise we achieved good results for this Berlin event."

"After our stay in the German capital, we now need to get back on track and focus on winter vegetables, which seem to be facing a not so favorable moment. The markets are under enormous pressure and saturation, and prices are already expected to fall, especially for parsley, dill and fennel".

"It must be due to the consequences of a rather mild winter. While temperatures above the seasonal average accelerate the ripening of the product, they also reduce consumption. However, so far sales and prices have been quite exciting, with a 20% increase in January alone."

"Anyway, we offer a vast array for this kind of product; in addition, it is possible to order up to 10 products at a time and convey them in the same order, on the same platform (mixed loading). This is an ideal solution especially for those customers who are not willing to give up quality and, at the same time, want to have a rich assortment of seasonal products".
