Amadou Sane, Bio Casamance Asso Group:

Senegal: How the fruit and vegetable sector fights unemployment

The Senegalese company “Bio Casamance Asso Group” sells a wide range of organic fruits and vegetables in France, Spain and on the local market. This year, the group will start exporting to Switzerland, Germany and Belgium. Amadou Sane, president and founder of the group, reports that his main objective is to “establish a model of social and economic development through a profitable agro-sylvo-pastoral production system. This system is based on a technology transfer and the training of local actors.”

Amadou adds that in Senegal, the raw material is already present locally. “However, there is a lack of high-tech material to improve our work. It is for this reason that we are searching for a win-win partnership, including the support to find importers for the next mango campaign.”

The group is focused on consulting support, production, processing and the export of agricultural products. “Promoting agriculture, livestock farming and processing will help generate wealth and absorb unemployment,” explains Amadou. “We contribute to the economic and social development of the population, through the technical mentoring of fruit tree producers, for example.” Besides, the group also works on promoting dialogue, and on preventing and managing conflicts.

Bio Casamance Asso Group is made up of a multidisciplinary team. “Most of our teams have long-term experience in the new production and product processing systems, in the coaching, training of actors, the study and design of projects, sustainable development issues, and the export of local products to foreign markets. Our approach is based on lasting growth and intended to bring a quality product on the market.”

Promoting local products
A large quantity of local products, especially mangos and citrus fruits, rot in Casamance. Other key products of the group include okra, sweet potatoes and beans. According to Amadou, the local bean market is very buoyant. Clients of the group include distribution wholesalers in the central markets and in export, purchasing centers of supermarket chains, and purchasing centers for hotel chains.

The group intends to fight against the excessive use of pesticides. As an alternative solution, it plans to introduce “organic breeding and agriculture” in its program, in order to improve the quality of the production and to be able to access the new markets. Within this framework, the actors will be technically supported in the creation of warehouses, agro-food units to set up the conditions for the storage, packaging, processing and marketing of local products.
