"Strawberry prices in China expected to rise"

Over the past few months, the Chinese market has seen an increasing supply of strawberries. The three largest strawberry producing regions of this country are Hebei, Liaoning, and Shandong. Currently, production areas are experiencing colder weather.

"Our strawberries became available in October 2019. The temperature has recently dropped and strawberries are ripening more slowly. Especially during January, production has declined as the weather got colder. Due to a slower ripening pace, strawberries are not turning red, but remaining green. We need to wait longer for strawberries that fully ripen naturally. We don’t apply chemicals or artificially ripen the products, so as to ensure that the harvested strawberries are fully natural,” Mr. Zhong Jie of Anhui Sishui Fruit Co., Ltd., said.

Anhui Sishui Fruit Co., Ltd. grows strawberries in greenhouses in Anhui. “Our production this year is over 50,000 kilos, similar to last year. Our variety is mainly 'Tianxian Zui'. It is a creamy strawberry variety with good sweetness, fragrant with a good texture, and is not hollow in the middle. Their deformity rate is low, and each strawberry is heart-shaped.

"Due to the high loss rate during long-distance transportation, we mainly market our products in Anhui and its surrounding areas. The recent drop in production has driven the prices up. Judging from the current situation, I expect prices to rise as supply shrinks. Today (January 15), the market price is 15 yuan per half a kilo,” Mr. Zhong Jie shared.

With the approach of the Spring Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday, a variety of fruits are flooding into the market. Among them, cherries are particularly popular. But Mr. Zhongjie thinks that this will not noticeably affect his sales.

"Cherry is a premium product, and the market still has a demand for strawberries, as their consumer groups are different. In addition, competition between us and other strawberry production regions is not fierce as we are in different regions and offer different varieties, so there is no conflict. "
