Huelva, Spain:

Strawberry production slowed down by the cold and prices soar

Huelva's strawberry production has been slowed down by the low temperatures recorded in recent days, so the volume harvested so far is insignificant, according to Rafael Domínguez, manager of Freshuelva.

Regarding the demand, Domínguez said that "the European supply and demand of strawberries at Christmas have stood at the usual levels for that time of the year, after which the demand has dropped considerably and is currently scarce."

As for the price of the strawberries, it is currently high due to the shortage of fruit in December and January, having reached 4 Euro per kilo at origin, both in Spain and abroad.

Between the months of December 2018 and June 2019, 239 million kilos of the fruit worth 471 million Euro were exported. The unit value of the strawberries exported reached 1.97 Euro per kilo.

The vast majority of strawberry exports go to the European Union, where the main trading partner is Germany, which last year absorbed 31.7% of exports. The other main trading partners were the United Kingdom (15.5%), France (14.6%) and Italy (10.3%). Far behind in the ranking we also have Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria or Belgium, with volumes above 8,000 tons.

The acreage devoted to berry cultivation in the province of Huelva this campaign amounts to about 11,700 hectares. This represents an increase of 2% compared to the 11,464 hectares of berries planted in the 2018/2019 season, according to Freshuelva data.

Freshuelva will be present with its own stand in Hall 18 at the 28th edition of Fruit Logística, which will be held in Berlin between February 5 and 7.
