Perry Verstraeten, De Blaeij

“Our clients want only Class 1 products”

After a relatively quiet festive season, it is back to business as usual at De Blaeij wholesalers. “There are no real Christmas crowds anymore. Almost all of our products are available year-round. Exotic products are, therefore, no longer anything special at Christmas dinner," says Perry Verstraeten.

“We are currently selling a lot of kakis and citrus. We have clementines of the Drie Vrouwen brand. These are selling very well. They have top quality and our clients always return to this brand. There is a little less supply this year. We can, however, still meet our clients' needs well."

“January is also the month that people start eating a lot of apples and pears again. Our clients take more apples than pears. Despite this, pear sales are currently going well too. We have a lot of Turkish clients who buy Jonagold apples."

"They find it important that an apple looks good, preferably shiny. They do not want dull apples. That is why the French shiny apple varieties are such a hit with our clients," adds Perry.

“Our clients also do not want Class 2 products anymore. That has been the case for about the last three years now. The products must look as good as possible. Otherwise, they do not sell and end up in the trash. And that costs money."

According to the trader, vegetable sales are good throughout the year. "Iceberg lettuce, spinach, and tomatoes actually always do well. But our various Turkish peppers also sell well. Our clients can do a lot of trade in a week. We are always very pleased with that," concludes Perry.
