Saverio Orlando's (Orlando Srl) comment

Bad moment for vegetables, but after Christmas the situation should improve

A comment on the vegetables' market? "From November 1st until today, a disaster. However, there is definitely room for improvement. We will have to wait for the Christmas holidays to end, though. At the moment, we work but we struggle: the profit is really limited. We're talking about cents". That's the comment by Saverio Orlando of the Orlando company, Orlando Srl, holder of the Ortolando brand.

Fennel is abundant. But, according to the entrepreneur, the price does not reflect the expectations of the campaign. "We are in full production of fennel, the product is good and the demand is good. We buy the product from different areas. In Foggia (Puglia) good quantities are still available; we started about ten days ago with the supplies from Basilicata; and Calabria as well is at the starting blocks. Now what must not happen is the infamous price war among traders, because it is a damaging policy for the whole sector".

"We remain confident, however - stresses Saverio - With the winter season, something will necessarily have to change. It is useless to beat ourselves down. After the holidays I expect an improvement in sales and consumption. Following the famous Christmas binge, in fact, people tend to take the good intention of following a diet. What better ally than vegetables?".

In addition to fennel, the company is marketing spring onion and cauliflower. "In Campania there is no spring onion. The request, in line with the other years, cannot be satisfied entirely due to a poor yield. In the Nocerino-Sarnese area the plants have suffered during cultivation, hence reduced size of the bulb. Moreover, the rains of the last period have not helped to keep the product fresh".

"As for the cauliflower, in the Caserta area the presence of Alternaria and the bad weather have created many problems. The product shows stains and, in some cases, even rot. The situation is different in the area of Battipaglia and in Puglia, where quality is better".
