Primo Sole's Dolce Lucano fennel

"A year ago, we set up a project to learn more about fennel in Metaponto. We researched its organoleptic qualities using NIR spectroscopy and studied the qualities consumers look for in what they consider a perfect fennel," explains Francesca Appio, administrative and communications manager at Op Primo Sole, when talking about the new Dolce Lucano brand.

"We started delivering the produce under the new brand on November 16th 2019 in large stores in northern Italy and officially launched it a few days later. Dolce Lucano does not identify a single cultivar, but rather all the crunchy aromatic fennel from Basilicata available between October and May. We are currently focusing on the Italian market but are looking to reach the international market in the future."

"The idea was to promote local fennel thanks to its flavor. Certified panel tests showed that fennel from Lucania has something more than the other produce harvested at the same time and at the same ripening level from both a visual (shine, white color) and organoleptic (sweet aniseed components, crunchiness and low fibrosity) point of view," added Giuseppe Appio, PO administrator and creator of the Dolce Lucano name.

Why the claim Gustalo crudo (Enjoy it raw)? "We wanted to segment supply. In some areas and mostly abroad, fennel is mainly eaten cooked. The slogan wants to introduce a new way of eating this vegetable so consumers can appreciate its crunchiness and freshness," explains Rosangela.

"We developed a fully recyclable packaging solution, as the cardboard crate can be placed in the paper bin, while the PLA film and labels are biodegradable. Nonetheless, we are always looking for innovative packaging solutions that employ other organic matrices such as cellulose."

Dolce Lucano will be increasingly available in stores and will be promoted via a suitable communication campaign.
