The export of Belgian leeks is starting to slowly get going. The Belgian payout prices to the growers are currently a bit too high compared to our competitors on the export markets. "Currently our biggest competitors are Poland and the Netherlands," says Pol Dendauw from Calsa. “In any case, it is positive that most customers are willing to pay a little more for our good "Belgian"quality. But there is a limit to that extra price. And the difference is too big at the moment. "
“The higher leek price is a result of the relatively low supply. The low supply is partly a result of the dry summer and the late cauliflower season for the industry. This means the leeks are being harvested a little later. Once the cauliflower has been harvested, the growers will have time for the leeks again, which will benefit the supply and probably also our competitive position," says Pol.
The leek area has increased slightly compared to last year. Nevertheless, the trader does not expect the area to increase much in the coming years. “I think we are at a good area at the moment. It should not get much bigger, because that is at the expense of the price," says Dendauw.
“The growers, on the other hand, have to be careful that they continue to grow the right varieties. The Belgian leek is known for its top quality and I am afraid that many growers are switching to varieties that yield a lot in terms of yield, but that are less qualitative. It is important for the future that we can continue to maintain the quality difference with other countries and continue to guarantee our customers the best quality.” Pol concludes.
