The available supply of domestic and imported bananas in the Spanish Peninsular and Balearic markets continues to set new highs month after month. In August 2019, 26,478 tons of fruit were shipped from the Canary Islands, while imports, mainly from Africa and Latin America, amounted to 17,578 tons. Since re-exports stood at 7,507 tons, Spanish consumers had access to about 36,549 tons of bananas. The market share of imported bananas in August has ranged from a minimum of 28% to a maximum of 48% of the total supply in Spain.
The main suppliers of imported bananas in August were Costa Rica with 7,738 tons, Colombia, with 5,858 and Côte d'Ivoire, with 1,122. Together, these three countries account for 83% of the total volume.
So far in 2019, shipments from the Canary Islands have reached almost 253,175 tons, while imported bananas amounted to 224,418 and re-exports to 71,314 tons, so the total available supply has reached 413,317 tons; 3,545 more than in the same period of 2018. The cumulative market share of imported bananas has ranged from a minimum of 39% to a maximum of 54% of the supply available in Spain.
The main suppliers of imported bananas so far this year have been Costa Rica, with 69,092 tons, Colombia with 60,653, and Côte d'Ivoire, with 37,466. Together, these three account for 74% of the total volume.
