The Valencian Association of Agricultural Producers (AVA-Asaja) has warned that the lack of phytosanitary solutions for agricultural productions caused by the European restrictions on them has resulted in the loss of 60,000 tons of kakis in the province of Valencia alone.
The organization has issued this warning in the framework of the efforts made by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which seeks to minimize food waste, and which has led the European Commission to launch initiatives aimed at reducing food waste in restaurants and homes.
The extent to which kaki cultivation is affected is the latest example. According to a study carried out by AVA-Asaja, the inability to fight mealybugs, whiteflies and thrips is resulting in some plots of the Ribera region recording up to 80% of crop damage.
