High prices for wholesale pears

As expected, wholesale pear prices are high due to the low quantities available.

Abate pears in crates holding 16 fruits

"Abate was the variety mostly affected by the bad weather, diseases and insects, and that's why it registers the highest prices. We sell 16-fruit crates at €2/kg and 14-fruit ones at €2.15/kg. Pears with smaller grades in 18-fruit crates are sold at around €1.70/kg." Bins sell at €1.30/kg and the produce only slightly damaged by hail can even be found at €1.

The wholesaler also reports that French wholesalers are buying lots of smaller fruits, maybe because they are stocking up due to the lack of produce.

Decana del Comizio

"Decana del Comizio is selling at €2.20/kg, 20 cents more than in 2018. William Bianco is sold at around €2/kg."

Angelica pears, very popular in Umbria and Marche

Angelica is another popular variety, especially in Marche and Umbria. Grade 65+ is sold at around €1.70/kg.

Volpine pears in crates sell at €2/kg. Grades are medium with short-medium stalks. The peel is yellow and reddish in the areas exposed to the sun. The flesh is juicy with a sweet acidic flavor. Excellent both fresh and to make jams.
