Cherry Vision 3.0, the new technology from Unitec

Precision and efficiency in the sorting by quality of French cherries

“Cherry Vision 3.0 works perfectly. This technology has allowed us to become much more efficient, accurate and meticulous in the sorting of cherries. Our producers are more than satisfied with the work we do and, of course, our customers too.” These are the words of Thomas Coignat, owner of Cerifrais; a French shipping and packaging center specialized in cherries, after completing the first season with Unitec's Cherry Vision 3.0 technology.

Cerifrais, which has been a Unitec customer for several years and owns the Cherry Vision 2 system, has invested in the new Cherry Vision 3.0 technology, and the results have not taken long to arrive.

Faury, a fruit and vegetable center in Provence, said that the decision to buy this technological update allowed it to significantly improve the efficiency in the production, making it possible not only to reduce waste, but also to improve its value.

Cherry Vision 3.0 gives a new life to classes suitable for different distribution and marketing channels, subdividing the fruits in a multiplicity of classes based on several parameters that are independent from each other. The ripest cherries, for example, can be sold in local markets, while the least ripe can be exported, since they can withstand longer shipping times without quality problems on arrival at the destination markets, etc. Therefore, the use of the Cherry Vision 3.0 technology also leads to the opening of new and more profitable export markets, even in destinations that are far from the handling facilities.

The Unitec Cherry Vision 3.0 system, an update of the Cherry Vision 2 technology, is, in fact, the latest innovation in the field of cherry sorting in terms of quality.

In addition to allowing cherries to be selected based on size, color and consistency, this technology can detect with extreme precision the presence of cracks or damage in the fruit (the so-called apical damage). This is a very important advantage that can be essential in seasons marked by the impact of heavy rains.

Cherry Vision 3.0, fully developed by the Unitec Research and Development department, is equipped with new high resolution cameras, which scan 100% of the cherry surface, allowing the fruit to be observed in its entirety, even the more hidden parts.

Ruel, the French fruit and vegetable center dedicated to the production and processing of cherries, which already had a Unitec line equipped with Cherry Vision 2 technology, has also invested in the new Cherry Vision 3.0 system and has positively commented on the “global vision” capacity of this technological update. "We get a better quality from the sorting machine, as well as a more accurate detection of apical damage. With Cherry Vision 3.0, you get a better view of the whole fruit. There is no longer a 'dead angle' in it; that is, an area not visible by the cameras."

Lastly, Thomas Coignat, of Cerifrais, said that thanks to Cherry Vision 3.0, the fruit and vegetable plant has been able to obtain cherry batches with a high level of qualitative homogeneity; something that would otherwise have been difficult to achieve.

The words of the French clients and the results obtained have filled the Unitec team with joy, as it is working every day to make its technologies more and more accurate, reliable and efficient, thereby helping fruit and vegetable plants achieve the desired results.
