On August 23, Antonio González Casillas was once again awarded as the producer of the largest watermelon in Spain in the Rufino Pineda Mendoza contest, held in the town of Villanueva de la Serena, in Extremadura.
Antonio won the award with a 100 kg watermelon, breaking the record he set in Spain last year, when he won the contest with a 92.2 kg fruit.
When it was time to place the watermelon on the scale, the help of five people was required to move it. Antonio, who says he has lost count of the times he has won the contest, says that the secret to obtaining these fruits is "much pampering, a good soil, drip irrigation and ideal weather conditions."
Watermelons shared the spotlight with melons, since another record was broken with them, as producer Manuel Manchado brought one weighting 29 kilos.
These figures have been increasing astronomically in the course of the contest's 58 editions, organized by the Association of Festivities of San Bartolomé Apóstol. As confirmed by the president of the entity, Jesús Ramos, at the beginning, the heaviest watermelons weighted about 12 kilos and the melons just 4 kilos. Now the fruits will be stored in refrigerating chambers in the food market until their weight is officially certified in a few days. After that, they will be tasted by the residents of the Villanueva de la Serena senior centers.
