Melon prices in Spanish region of Castile-La Mancha fall below production costs

The melon and watermelon campaign has started in the Spanish region of Castile-La Mancha with bad prices for melons and better ones for watermelons, as reported by Cristóbal Jiménez, president of the Melon and Watermelon Interprofessional of Castile-La Mancha and the Lonja of this autonomous region.

The melon campaign has kicked off with prices below the production costs, even though there is a balance between supply and demand.

The quality, however, is "very good." It is expected that, as the campaign develops, prices will rebound. At the moment, according to the latest data, extra quality melons cost between 0.19 and 0.23 Euro / kilo; the first class ones cost between 0.14 and 0.16 Euro, and the second class melons cost between 0.10 and 0.12 Euro, so the average would be about 0.07 Euro / kilo below the production cost.

The price of watermelons, on the other hand, is “more stable”, as acknowledged by the president of the Lonja, and does cover the production costs.

The prices oscillate between 0.21 and 0.23 Euro per kilo in the case of the first class seedless black watermelon and between 0.15 and 0.16 Euro in the case of the second class.
