real expands "Too Good to Go" initiative to the whole of Germany

A common fight against food waste

Real has been working successfully with the Too Good To Go initiative for one year to save excess, but otherwise flawless foodstuffs, from destruction. What started as a pilot phase in selected real markets, is now being successfully continued throughout Germany.

In the future, all 279 locations will participate in the campaign. This means real is the only retail company to date, that participates nationwide in all markets of the network. "As a company, we are always aware of our responsibility towards the environment and society, including the avoidance of food waste, which is firmly anchored in our corporate strategy of 'acting responsibly', says real CEO Patrick Müller-Sarmiento. "We are very pleased to continue the successful collaboration with Too Good To Go."

Too Good To Go spokeswoman and Germany boss Laure Berment was enthusiastic about the previous partnership as well: "We are pleased to expand our offer through the partnership with real in the German market. The successful cooperation has already saved more than 100,000 food portions from being thrown away. This is a great achievement for Too Good To Go and food rescue. It shows that wasting food stuffs can be easily and effectively avoided by working together."

The principle of the app is explained quickly: excess foodstuffs of otherwise impeccable quality are sorted and packed daily by professionals from the respective departments and in the respective category such. "Fruit and vegetables" or "baked goods" offered via the app as a "surprise bag" for around three euros.

Refrigerated goods such as dairy products are included only if a refrigerated intermediate storage of food can be ensured. In addition, the responsible project team is currently examining whether another product range can be included in the campaign.

The ordering process is very simple: after downloading the app, customers can select a real market with the appropriate number of portions and then they can pay directly through the app. With the payment process, a purchase receipt is then generated which the customers must present when they are picking up the goods in the market.

Positive feedback from customers and Too Good To Go users
There is a positive response from both the customers and the markets. Dr. Kerstin Kunz, head of real quality management: "The surprise bags that the Too Good To Go user orders via the app at real, are quickly sold out each time and are rated top with 4.7 out of 5 points! This is pleasing to both us and our customers; we are combating food waste together!"

No competition for food banks
In addition to the Too Good To Go partnership, real continues its commitment to food banks and charities as usual. Currently, more than 90 percent of real markets work together with the local food banks. However, some of these have limited storage or transportation facilities, making Too Good To Go an ideal complementary food-recovery solution.

Start-Up Too Good To Go continues to succeed
Too Good To Go is the leading food waste prevention app and is active in 11 European countries already. Restaurants, supermarkets, bakeries, cafes, hotels and other establishments can sell their over-produced food in the app, customers can pick up these foods for a reduced price. As a result, food is not disposed of and the environmental impact is reduced. Since the beginning of 2016, 16 million meals have been saved worldwide from destruction.
