In his closing speech at the First Conference on the Future of Potatoes in Spain, held last week in Medina del Campo, Javier Meléndez, general director of Patatas Meléndez, proposed the objective of "turning Castile-León into a European leader in the supply of quality potatoes."
The event, which brought together almost two hundred professionals at the facilities of Patatas Meléndez, featured two individual conferences by José Manuel Peláez Izquierdo, president of the Company Committee at Europatat, and Javier Boceta Osuna, CEO of Meijer Spain.
The round table "Potato prices for the grower and the value chain" counted with the participation of the presidents of the four agricultural professional organizations of Castile-Leon, as well as of representatives of the potato operators. In the course of the same, everyone recognized the need to provide price stability to the sector, as well as to rely on the potato interprofessional in order to gain negotiating strength.
Lastly, Javier Meléndez closed the seminar praising the work of Patatas Meléndez in recent years for its bet on quality, technification and robotization of the facilities, and especially for the sector's professionalization through the "signing of contracts with producers to ensure that everyone receives a fair price for their work."
Meléndez also had good things to say about his company's agricultural plan to work hand in hand with producers and help them improve their presence in the market. The leading company in the Spanish potato sector has a market share of 18%, with 170 million kilos sold in 2018 and 250 workers.
