In a new step towards sustainability, Carrefour will progressively implement several measures to reduce the use of plastic in its stores. The distribution chain has announced the decision to eliminate the plastic film that it uses in its fruit and vegetable trays. It will also stop packing Canary bananas in bags and will tie them up with small ribbons instead. Moreover, it will start using glass jars in the olives and pickles section, and in the fruit and vegetable counters of its hypermarkets, plastic film will be replaced by mesh.
A representative of Carrefour recalled that they have already stopped using plastic with the fruits and vegetables sold under its BIO brand, in addition to giving consumers the option "to use their own containers or bags for their purchases in the various departments, consequently reducing the amount of packaging handed over at the counters."
