The iceberg lettuce market is under considerable pressure. "We have too large a supply and low prices. This has been the case for a number of weeks," says Niek Haerkens of Marni Fruit. "The goes for the entire lettuce range, varieties like lollo bionda and lollo rosso are behind in price formation."

This is in stark contrast to last year. "The season last year started bad, but the price curve then rose rapidly," Niek remembers. "This is not the case this year. Prices for iceberg lettuce are around 3.50 Euro at the moment, and I don't see the market suddenly improving over the coming two weeks."
"There is a lot of competition from the German lettuce, but other than that I can't really put my finger on why the market is so difficult. The lettuce is just hard to sell. We are receiving a lot of demand from other growers to market their lettuce, but we have our hands full trying to sell that of our own growers at the moment."
