In terms of German berry fruits, domestic wholesaling is currently witnessing its peak season. Apart from strawberries, the other berry crops from local cultivation are now also available at the specialist retailers. Also, the German blueberry harvest is ready to go, says Christian Fischermann, owner of the Cologne wholesale company Wolf GmbH.
Christian Fischermann of Wolf GmbH shows regionally cultivated fresh raspberries.
"Raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants and regional gooseberries are now all coming onto the market. During the main season, we trade 70-80 percent of selected products from regional producers," reports Fischermann. Last Monday, the first German blueberries arrived in Cologne. Price wise, this first product of the season stands at between 8 and 10 euros per kilo. Dutch greenhouse goods have been on the market for a few weeks now. Statements on pricing and quantity are difficult to make at this time.
Domestic berry fruits and asparagus are the focus of the company's specialties. The product range is supplemented by fruit vegetables and salads from the Netherlands and Belgium. After the Christmas business, the owner says goodbye to the market to enjoy a well-deserved winter break, after which he usually starts again in March - as soon as the first regional fresh produce is available again in the trade.
This weekend, the local asparagus campaign officially ended. The last products of the year were also traded at Wolf GmbH.
Berry fruit as a snack
Looking at the long term, the retailer already observed an overall berry fruit trend. "The prices tend to rise the last few years, because pickers and with them, big production volumes are becoming scarcer." At the same time, the demand for berries is also gradually rising, sees Fischermann. "We see an increased demand for soft fruits - whether raspberries, blackberries or cultivated blueberries - as a snack."
