Heavy storms have again caused significant damage in the past few days. "Hailstones almost as big as chicken eggs" dropped down in Müden on the Aller in Lower Saxony, smashing the greenhouses of a producer, the local daily newspapers reported.
"So far, no day without a claim report" - this is how Vereinigte Hagelversicherung, which insures outdoor crops in the horticulture sector and in particular vegetable and fruit growing, summarizes the previous bad weather situation in June. A main damage focal point was found in the north, especially in the Greater Hannover area up to the Altes Land, the insurer explained to the TASPO.
In the case of fruit, many stone and berry fruit crops were damaged; for vegetables, the insured damaged area was around 300 to 400 hectares. In individual cases, there was considerable damage. It was mainly leafy vegetables, asparagus, but also medicinal and spice plants, according to Vereinigte Hagelversicherung.
