India: Rain causes seasonal fruit prices to increase

Although the temperatures in Chandigargh, India have dropped, the increasing demand for seasonal fruits and vegetables, along with the rain have caused prices to go up. Prices for fruit and vegetables are higher than they were a week ago.

According to vendors on the market, the rain has affected the prices. The prices for watermelons have tripled, but the other fruits also had marginal increases in their price. The 42 degree temperature saw the demand for seasonal fruits like watermelon, muskmelon, mango and papaya increase, as these fruits are traditionally considered to have cooling properties, along with hydrating qualities. Eating fruit and vegetables is very important, says Kamlesh, a vendor on the market: “Eating raw onions and drinking raw onion juice is very beneficial in the summer season. They not only aid in digestion, but also help us keep our body cool.”
