"In the past, the first weeks of the season were always seeing very high prices; nowadays fruit and vegetables are already cheap coming onto the market," says Thomas Reitmeier, Managing Director of Emil Augustin Gemüsegroßhandel GmbH & Co.
Since the start of the month, he already has had the first German carrots from outdoor Palatinate cultivation in his range. "So far, sales are good, German goods are very popular. But surprisingly, prices are not picking up, despite higher costs, such as those of harvesting."
Higher prices cannot be enforced from his position, which he regrets. "With big competition in the market, producers are forced to sell their goods below their value because they are afraid of not reaching the market."
Products from the Pfalz region are very well received: "Celery from the Palatinate harvest is popular as well."
Augustin supplies fresh foodstuffs to commercial kitchens, hotels, catering companies, weekly marketers, suppliers and retailers.
