Austrian apricot harvest starts with 'outstanding' product quality

"In the last week of June at the earliest will we be able to supply the supermarkets"

In the metropolitan area of Vienna, this year's apricot harvest started this week. The season opener took place about a week later this year than in the previous year, but the current forecasts are quite good. "I can not say anything about the total volumes and the pricing, but the product quality is still outstanding," says Manfred Harbich, owner of the fruit growers of the same name, headquartered in Raasdorf.

Unchanged high quality
"In the last week of June at the earliest, we will also be able to supply the supermarkets, like Spar. The remaining products will go to retailers in the Vienna wholesale market and will be exported, to Munich among others," adds Harbich. According to him, within the domestic market, the importance of the native apricot has been stable and high for many years. "Every fruit merchant in Austria has to offer domestic apricots during the season, and the consumer is paying special attention to local produce."

Six varieties in the assortment
The experienced fruit grower cultivates a total of 6 varieties of apricots on 14 ha (total area: approx. 20 ha). The current early variety Pricia is is only offered in the yard sale. Later, other varieties such as Spring Blush, Orange Red, Goldrich, Hargrand and Bergeron will be added. Harbich: "The Bergeron is our most popular variety, as it sets itself apart from the other varieties in terms of taste. However, many new varieties are being tested."

The fresh drupes are processed and packed in the sorting hall at the same location. The goods end up under their own label in wholesale. Retailers however, mostly use their own brands.

Constant extension of the season
Last year, growers could harvest in the first week of June due to the heat. At this time, there were already many apricots. Harbich: "As a result, the campaign ended about two weeks earlier than usual, but we generally see a steady extension of the season due to the increase in early varieties. The classic harvest season was from early July to early August; Austrian apricots go from June to the beginning of September. "

Lake Constance region also starts the season
The apricot harvest has also started on the German side of Lake Constance. Various growers and direct marketers are announcing the first stone fruit of the season.
