More plums this year, despite the hailstorms

Apricot harvest kicks off in Badajoz with high yields and slightly low prices

The apricot harvest is starting in the Spanish province of Badajoz with high yields, thanks to a good flowering, and overlapping with other producing areas, such as Seville and Murcia. Given that there are currently more apricots available than the market can absorb, prices are under more pressure than at the start of the previous season.

"Due to the weather conditions, some apricot varieties from different production areas have overlapped, causing some temporary oversupply that has brought prices down considerably," says Justo Redondo, manager of the Extremadura-based company Nogal Fruits. "We hope that the available supply will stabilize in around fifteen days."

With regard to plums (Extremadura's most representative stone fruit in terms of volume), while last year's production was up to 50% smaller, higher volumes are expected this year, despite the hailstorms. "There will be a lot more plums than last year, although hailstorms have damaged between 15 and 20% of the fruit, making it unsuitable to be sold as first class," says the exporter.
