Italian melon specialist Don Camillo has launched a new brand - Lelis. It is a type of melon developed by Nunhems (Tiaré variety) with a perfectly smooth rind of an ivory color when ripe. It has an intense aroma with vanilla and floral notes and a sweet flavor typical of classic smooth melons, yet with an improved shelf-life and texture.
Ettore Cagna (in the photo above), president of Don Camillo, reports that "we have the exclusive and grow the melons in various areas from Sicily to Mantua, so they are available 5 months a year. We will start with the produce in greenhouses towards May 25th and continue until the second week of October."
2019 is the first year with considerable commercial volumes destined to both the domestic and foreign markets.
"It is a true innovation, as Tiaré represents the evolution of smooth melons in Europe. In addition to having an excellent flavor, it has a high sugar level (18-20° Brix) and quality remains constant throughout the season."
"I believe the market is ready to pay for high-quality. We have created a delicate packaging format, that can hold between 4 and 6 melons with stickers."
