Mehmet A. Bozkurt, Fruchtjäger Dortmund:

"Continued growth potential for berry fruits in German trade"

Due to the increasing importance of just-in-time procurement, and the declining wholesale market trade, there are some independent suppliers in the German retail trade who would like to fill the resulting gap in the market. One of them is Mehmet A. Bozkurt of the Dortmund-based company MAB QUALITY GMBH & CO, that offers its specialized range of goods directly to the trade.

Mehmet A. Bozkurt has devoted himself to the distribution of soft fruit

The company specializes in the distribution of various soft fruits and sees itself as a link between producers and purchasers. The main concern is to market the products without intermediate trade, explains Bozkurt. Fresh berries are delivered year-round, preferably from permanent suppliers in the Bielefeld area and Münsterland. "At the moment we also offer blueberries from our protected contract cultivation in Serbia in addition to our German assortment. We also offer Polish blueberries. "The core of the company, however, is domestic raspberry cultivation with a total yield of 400-500 tons. "We mainly produce late varieties and are expected to harvest at the beginning of July until the end of September. We also specialize in certain types of strawberries. In this area, the Florentina variety is currently in vogue."

Avoiding intermediate storage
The modern trading company was founded more than 10 years ago. Its broad customer base includes LEH branches and commercial wholesale customers. In contrast to the traditional wholesale trade, the fruit merchant - who used to work at the Dortmund wholesale store Feldenkirchen - tends to pay more attention to the quality and smooth procurement of goods. "Just-in-time goods procurement is becoming increasingly important, in my view. Therefore, we try to avoid intermediate storage and to place the goods directly with the customer. "

Europe-wide network
Despite the steady development of consumption, the retailer continues to see growth potential for its products. For this reason, Bozkurt has decided in particular for the distribution of berry fruits, although he also seasonal figs and grapes from Turkey. "My international network now extends from England to the Balkans and Russia. Each market has its own challenges and needs, and basically large-size fruits are well received. "

Further growth potential for soft fruits
"I am convinced that berry sales will remain stable over the next 10 years. The need for strawberries is now stagnating slowly, but blueberries and raspberries flow away quickly. Last winter, for example, we sold tons of blueberries," says the specialist, who is currently planning a new range extension.
