At noon everything has to go very quickly at Fruchthof Northeim. Two semi-trailers turn onto the grounds of the Drispenstedt branch and back into gates 11 and 12 of the huge warehouse. Manuel Kupka and René Birkner jump out of their cabs and hurry to log in and then to the forklifts. Inside their refrigerated trucks: tens of thousands of bananas from Ecuador. The two have just picked up the fruit in Bremerhaven, where the tropical fruits have just arrived by ship.

Everything else is bought by people all over northern Germany. "We deliver from Hamburg to Fulda, from Magdeburg to Bielefeld," says managing director Lutz Hasenbeck to a reporter from the Hildesheimer Allgemeine. The 78-year-old's main task is to manage 300 coworkers and a small fruit empire. But he is also a proven expert on bananas.
