Market Report Austria CW 17/2019:

'Easter boosts potato sales - onion prices continue to rise'

The Easter holidays gave a new impetus to the marketing of potatoes in Lower Austria. Although sales of both old and new potatoes increased, the higher availability made the increased quantity of the early produce much more pronounced. Goods left over from the domestic harvest 2018 are hardly available anymore. By the end of the week, more marketers will deal in Austrian goods.

The supply of imported goods within food retail will therefore continue to increase. But potatoes from France are becoming increasingly difficult for traders to get, because there is demand for this product all around Europe. The prices of imported potatoes have already risen sharply. For the remaining quantities of domestic potatoes, the prices remain unchanged. In Lower Austria, table potatoes are usually taken over at €25 per 100 kg. For wire worm-free, small packable premium goods with AMA quality label, up to €30 per 100 kg can be gotten.

Onion prices further tightened
The rise in prices in the Netherlands also enabled onion prices in Lower Austria to continue to rise. The onion supply in Lower Austria has already dropped off heavily and only a few suppliers have goods. Often, this product is already contractually fixed. There are customers for Austrian onions domestically and abroad, but exports have been restricted in order to secure domestic supply. For onion, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on the quality and size, the costs were usually between €60 and 64 per 100 kg.

Carrot market stable
The marketing of carrots in Lower Austria is to continue even after Easter. Contractually agreed quantities will be available until the new crop is connected; for the free goods, the stock levels are slowly running out. The price level remains stable at a good level.
