Italy: Fluctuating trends for kohlrabi

Kohlrabis grown in greenhouses are currently being harvested in the area near the Sele river mouth. Due to the unstable weather, the start of the campaign was delayed, however now the risk is that the produce will have to be harvested earlier than usual.

"It is the first year we are commercializing this crop and we have added it to our list upon our clients' requests. The commercial trend is also fluctuating, as prices are high in some markets while it can even be difficult to make a sale in others," explains Giovanni Orlando (in the photo below) from Orlando Srl in Angri (SA), owner of the Ortolando brand.

"We sell kohlrabi under contract and the producer we collect the produce from grows it on 3 hectares of greenhouses. Quality is good and our kohlrabi is particularly popular with our foreign clients in England, the Netherlands, Germany or even in the Czech Republic."

Given it is the first year of commercialization, the operator is more than pleased with how things are going.
