Rick Mengers, ZON:

"Very positive atmosphere for asparagus at auction "

Easter and asparagus are linked together each year. "We saw a very positive atmosphere at the auction again this week. The prices of double A asparagus were towards 6 Euro, which is a very good price," says asparagus seller Rick Mengers of Royal ZON.

He is positive about the coming weeks. "We now have the volumes that normally come at the start of May, but the price ratio is neatly in balance. I am certainly not complaining. The growers of heated asparagus haven't had as good a season due to the good weather in February," says Rick.

"There will be a lot of asparagus on the market over the coming weeks, but is there is also demand, the market will hopefully remain balanced and keep the price at a reasonable level. It has been quite cold in Germany as well, so if there is less production there too, it could be a very good Easter week," says the salesman.

"What stands out is that the sortings this year are a bit thinner than we're used to. In the Netherlands and Germany in particular they prefer double A asparagus, so it will be a tougher season for the whole 10-16 mm sorting," concludes Rick.
