Italy: Slight growth for Unes supermarkets in 2018

"In some of our stores, the fresh produce sector reaches 55-60% of the turnover. It is clear how considerable attention is placed on this segment, so clients need to always be able to find the best product."

The latest opening dates back to last week

This was reported by Rossella Brenna, sales director of Unes Supermercati. Another store was opened in the Como province over the past few days. "The trend is to open supermarkets that cover around 1500 square meters depending on the area and its needs. The company has always decided against discounting products, opting instead for offering a fair price day after day."

As recently reported by Unes president Mario Gasbarrino, supermarkets part of the Unes group have something different: no underpriced products and no promotional activities. "Quality and price need to be fair every day. It is a question of respect."

"We have a platform for the management of fresh produce but, at the same time, the various stores make agreements with local producers to sell local products."

As for waste, Unes is performing tests in collaboration with Banco Alimentare and applying 50% discounts to products nearing the expiration date.

"Our department managers operate so as to monitor flows and try to limit losses as much as they can."

As regards the 2018 trend, Rossella Brenda reports that " there has been a slight increase in fresh produce sales. The trend was more positive in other years due to different economic performances. Anyway 2018 saw an increase."
