Norway: market share of organic rising

In 2018, the Norwegians bought 300 million euro worth of organic food, an eight per cent increase compared to 2017. According to the report of the Norwegian agricultural council, 4.2 per cent of the total agricultural area in Norway is now organic.

The organic area increased considerably between 2000 and 2012, but that trend then stagnated. In 2018, an increase of conventional companies switching to organic could be seen. One of the reasons is that prices of organic food show an increase while those of conventional food are dropping. However, one worry is that the organic area and organic production aren’t properly geared to consumers’ demand for organic.

Internationally, an increase of the organic production and area can also be seen. However, in this case, supply and demand aren’t well-balanced either. An additional problem is that there are multiple organic hallmarks, each with different regulations companies have to stick to in order to be eligible for certification.

Within Scandinavia, Sweden and Denmark have the largest share of organic: ten per cent in Denmark, nine per cent in Sweden.
