The famous apple of the Alps is losing favour with consumers and local fruit growers are therefore investing in the renewal of their orchards.
Around Gap and Tallard in the Hautes-Alpes, major growing area for the famous apple, growers are abandoning the Golden for other varieties more adapted to the market. In the departments of the Alps, only 1% of the orchards are renewed each year, which is far behind the 5% at the national level. Orchards are now being planted that will yield apples in 2 or 3 years.
