New vegetables are still a niche within Swiss cultivation

Pak-Choi: An alternative to traditional types of cabbage

Pak-Choi is grown extensively in Asia. But you can also find products, grown in Switzerland. The season is from April to November. Pak-Choi is closely related to the Chinese cabbage, which is better known in this country. But the vegetables, which are widespread in Asia, are also cultivated in Switzerland: a nice 16 hectares in 2017 alone. That resulted in a harvest of 445 tons, while another 803 tons were imported.

The Pak-Choi grows very fast and can be harvested in 6-8 weeks. In Asia, there are several varieties of Pak-Choi. For example, there is the so-called Baby Pak-Choi or the Shanghai Pak-Choi. While the Baby Pak-Choi has a milder taste, the Shanghai Pak-Choi has a particularly spicy flavor.
