High winds damage onion crops in Northern Italy

The first checks indicated that there has been a great deal of damage, but now we can be sure of that. The windstorm that hit the provinces of Bologna, Ravenna and Forlì-Cesena on the night of the 25th of March 2019 damaged the onion seedlings that had germinated a few days before.

"The whole thing has been amplified - explains a technician - by the lack of rain. The wind was very strong and damaged the plants. The damage is difficult to estimate, but 40% of the plots were affected. How many plants will recover and how many will not is still to be seen.

There will, therefore, be a sort of "natural selection" since many more hectares of onion were sown than last year.

A representative of a seed company reported: "We have had strong demand for golden onions, perhaps because they have sold best and had the highest profits, also because they are in high demand abroad. But the market will decide the final value of the product".
