Brexit: 50,000 jobs at stake in France

According to a German study, more than 600,000 jobs could be lost in the world, including 50,000 jobs in France, in case of a Brexit without agreement on March 29th.

Negotiations between London and Brussels are at a dead end and the risk of a “harsh Brexit” is growing, as the March 29th deadline approaches, when the United Kingdom will leave the European Union.

The German Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) published a study on Monday on the impact of a Brexit without agreement with the European Union on the job market. It shows that 612,000 jobs would be threatened in 43 countries. France and Germany would be among the most affected. With a 25% drop in European imports to the United Kingdom (a number higher than what the British government predicts), 102,000 jobs would be lost in Germany and 50,000 in France. A comparable number of workers would be affected in Italy, Poland and China. In France, the most affected sectors include food products, furniture manufacturing, wholesale trade, as well as business support and service functions.

On January 17th, the French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe detailed the plan of action in case of a “harsh Brexit”. It includes legislative and legal measures to limit the disruption of rights and to protect the rights of French citizens and French businesses. Additionally, 50 million euros [56.4 million USD] have been mobilized for the emergency construction of infrastructures necessary to restore border controls (customs, sanitary and phytosanitary controls of persons and merchandise).
