Minister plans to quadruple organic farming in Luxembourg

Over the next seven years, Minister of Agriculture Romain Schneider, wants to quadruple the amount of land in Luxembourg that is devoted to organic farming.

The ambitious plans were revealed on the side-lines of a meeting between the minister and the Bio-Lëtzebuerg association. Schneider says that the target by 2025 , for organic farming, should increase from 4.6% now to 20%.

Little is known at this stage regarding how this growth could be achieved. The minister only stated that a national strategy will be developed in cooperation with the sector, and Bio-Lëtzebuerg, the platform that brings together all the country's organic producers.

According to Eurostat data released late last month, the Grand Duchy is one of the EU countries with the smallest area devoted to organic farming in relation to the total agricultural area. Only 4.2% of Luxembourg total cultivation area is reserved for organic production, which puts the country below the European average of 7 %.
