Austrian Potato Market KW 03/2019

Good supply situation is met with calm but steady demand

The Austrian table potato market is stable. After the price increase of last previous week, farmers' willingness to deliver goods has picked up significantly. On the one hand, no further price increases are expected in the short run. On the other hand, many farmers would like to get rid of their stocks sooner rather than later, given the rapid physiological ageing of stored goods.

Domestic demand at a similar level
Domestic demand is likely to remain at a similar level over the coming weeks as well. Exports are not pushed too hard in the face of rapidly dwindling stocks. Producer prices are stable at last week's levels. In Lower Austria, table potatoes are usually marketed at €25 per 100 kg. For wire worm-free, small packable premium goods with AMA quality seal up to €29 per 100 kg can be achieved. In Upper Austria, up to €27 Euro per 100 kg was paid recently.

Onion prices rising again
The positive price trend on the Austrian onion market is continuing for another week. On the domestic market, however, manageable supply volumes are met with a steady domestic demand. But above all, the export market continues to be very receptive, having a corresponding price-driving effect. So last week, onion prices rose again. For onions, cleaned and sorted in the box, depending on the quality and size, now between €44 and 48 per 100 kg is reasonable. For exported goods, higher prices can be gotten as well.

Carrot market remains stable
The situation on the Lower Austrian Carrot Market has hardly changed compared to last week. Sales on the domestic market are going at the usual seasonal level. Exports are also going out on a manageable scale. For producer prices, there is no real change compared to last week. In the next few weeks some price increases are expected.
