Lychees: their arrival in Europe by boat is imminent

Baltic Klipper, the first conventional ship transporting 7,800 pallets of lychees from Madagascar is expected in Zeebrugge, Belgium, over the weekend. This arrival is slightly delayed due to difficult sailing conditions. The product will nevertheless be available early next week, just in time for the end of the campaign for early lychees and lychees imported by plane.

This campaign ends on a rather morose note for the operators, given the cumulative contributions and the competition between the different Indian Ocean origins, which led to overall lower prices. On the French market, it went from 8 euros to 4.5 euros [9 to 5 USD] at the end of the campaign, compared to a decline from 7 to 5 euros [8 to 5.5 USD] in 2017-2018. Due to this competition, distributors were forced to reduce their orders in order to avoid a complicated situation with the marketing of the fruits from the first conventional ship. The ‘yellow vests’’ movement also hampered the deliveries to the retailers and prevented the consumers from doing their shopping.
