Looking forward to festivities

A comparison with last year in Italy: more production but fewer sales

Due to the prolonged exposure to high temperatures, the quality of many Italian products has declined slightly and a number of discrepancies have been recorded. "The production of oranges and clementines was good in terms of quantity, but the quality was quite disappointing. We should be at the top of the range, but the price is between 0.55 and 0.80USD/kilo. At the moment, we are also marketing Policoro strawberries, and these are showing good results. The apple market is not yet where it should be: the prices were good at the beginning and now they are falling. Pears also suffer from ups and downs". This is what Giuseppe Iacovazzo, manager of La Nuova Miriam Frutta from Apulia, reported to FreshPlaza.

"The start of the chestnut season went well and we continued until the quality became a bit poorer. Indeed, currently, only superior quality chestnuts can be sold at 2.25 USD/kg or more. There are new varieties and Chinese grafts on Italian plants. Last year in this period we imported chestnuts from Greece and Spain at low prices".

The pineapple market is doing well, especially the new Honeyglow from Del Monte.

With regard to nuts, the market is in good conditions as well, especially considering the sales expected in the Christmas period. The kaki, on the other hand, has seen bad times with very low prices.

"Now that temperatures are lower and the holidays are approaching, there should be movement in the market. Compared to last year, we currently have more production but less sales".

Moreover, Giuseppe plans to start his own project soon. He wants to move to Spain and, from there, focus on the Italian and international market by offering a mediation service.
