Due to the latest tax increase, the price of diesel fuel in France has exceeded €1500 for one thousand liters, sparking a lot of protests. "In Italy, the cost of diesel has been higher than that for a long time, but no one is protesting," reports Massimo Savini from RLA.
"Fuel is one of the main expenses for our companies and costs have become unsustainable. Yet we are so self-centered and badly organised that no one is thinking about protesting. We just pay. In the meantime, Italian logistic businesses are closing down and foreign ones, which are more structured and have lower costs, take their place"
Over the past 10 years, the cost of diesel has increased by approximately 30%, as can be seen by the charts below taken from the Ministry for Economic Develop website (click here for the original website).

Notice that the excise duty, which is fixed, was €423 every 1000 liters in 2008. Over the years it increased to the current €617,40 every thousand liters. VAT plus excise duties are much higher than the industrial cost of diesel! The average global price at the pump is of €1200 every 1000 liters.

"Another strictly Italian anomaly is the disproportionate and unjustified increase of fuel in highway pumps. While they are some of the most easily reachable in the entire peninsula compared to those on the mountains, for example, prices remain sky-high. A few days ago, I saw a highway pump selling diesel at €1.9/liter. Absurd."
As regards Genoa, Savini explains that logistics is considerably delayed by the collapse of the Morandi Bridge. "Our drivers take longer to make deliveries or collect and costs increase too."
