The apple harvest has started in Civril, Denizli, a city located in southwestern Turkey. Denizli is very well known for its apple production and the production area spans across 5,470 hectares where 120,839 tons of apples are grown annually. 70 % of the production is immediately sold to wholesalers whereas the rest is stored in cold storages for a later sale.
Denizli Agricultural City Official Yilmaz Erkaya: “The climate is very suitable for apple production and it is a very important source of income for the people in various districts in the city, such as Civril, Cameli, Buldan, Tavas, Cal and Baklan. The main varieties grown are golden delicious and starking delicious.
Other important news for apple growers came from Ardahan, a city on the northeastern border of Turkey. Ardahan is home for the production of a very unique variety of apple and the process for trademarking these apples is about to be completed. The unique feature of this particular apple variety is that both its inside and outside is red.
The effort to trademark this variety has been under way for 1.5 years and has been carried out in a combined effort by the Pasof local municipality and the Ardahan Chamber of Commerce. Currently academicians from Ardahan University have collected samples from apple gardens and are preparing them for submission to the Turkey Patent and Brand Agency.
Ardahan Chamber of Commerce Chairman Cetin Demirci: “If we can successfully complete the trademark process, we believe it will immensely contribute to the city’s economy. We have been losing a lot of our population due to migration but this would be an important step to putting an end to that.
We are trying to create a trademark product for our city. 26 different varieties of apples are grown in Ardahan but this particular variety with its red insides is very unique and stands out among the rest.”
