The warm November weather wouldn’t necessarily seem like ideal conditions for smooth kale sales. Yet according to Mike Glas from Glas-Groenten in the Netherlands, sales aren’t at all bad. “Besides domestic sales, more and more kale is shipped abroad as well. The exporters we supply send the kale to destinations such as Germany, Norway and even Dubai. Kale consumption is actually on the rise everywhere.”
“On a warm day like today, everyone tends to be a bit more careful with their orders, but we’ve seen that more often in the past few weeks. Mark my words, they’ll all be on the phone again tomorrow,” Mike smiles. The sprouts sales, however, have slumped a bit in the past week, according to Mike. “There were a lot of promotions with sprouts in the past few weeks, maybe these are the after effects of that.”
Because Glas-Groenten primarily works on a contract base, the fluctuating day trade doesn’t affect him much. Besides the sprouts and kale, he also supplies carrot and ‘kilo cabbages,’ both red, white and green in organic and conventional versions. “The cabbage is much affected by the dry weather. Quality is a bit more difficult this season because of that, but the advantage is that it results in slightly higher prices,” Mike concludes.
