China: Leek price greatly increased

In some production areas the price of leeks has greatly increased to almost twice the level of last year. Traders in the market sold leeks in bunches in recent years, but this year those are hard to find as traders sell individual leeks.

The price of leeks has been unstable in recent years. The price was not so bad in 2012, but so many farmers expanded the surface area devoted to leek plantation that it caused the price to fall. The price fell even further in 2014, but suddenly increased again in 2015. The price fell again to new depths in the winter of 2016, to only 0.4 yuan [0.06 USD] per 0.5 kg. The price remained low in 2017 around 0.8 yuan [0.12 USD] per 0.5 kg, but is currently at an average of 1.2 yuan [0.18 USD] per 0.5 kg in production areas.

Although the price increased this year, several production areas suffered from frequent rainfall in summer which slowed down the growth of leeks and the overall production volume greatly decreased. The price of leek began to increase in winter last year and the increase became more obvious in autumn this year. The main reason for this development is the reduced production volume in many production areas. The overall supply volume decreased, but when the next harvest enters the market, the price could come down again.
